Camping Food Alternatives to Those Disgusting S’mores You’ve Been Eating

By February 24, 2018October 15th, 2019Recipes

There is something mysterious about s’mores.  Taken individually, each of the components are delicious.  Assemble the pieces and it becomes nauseating.

I realize this opinion is in the minority,  but for the sake of those who agree with me, I urge you to consider other camping food the next time you head into the woods.

Popcorn

  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Foil
  • Canola or Coconut Oil
  • Butter
  • Salt

Form a packet out of foil, filled with popcorn kernels and one or two teaspoons of oil.  Place the packet just above the coals of your fire.  Listen to the popping.  When the time between pops becomes longer, remove the packet and let it cool.  Add butter and salt.

Bacon on a Stick

  • Bacon
  • Stick

Wrap some bacon around a stick.  Cook it over your fire.  Consume the bacon.

Sweet Wheelies

  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Dough (homemade or Pillsbury biscuit)

Pour oil into a cast iron Lodge pan, or other skillet that can tolerate the flames, until about 1/3 full.

Bring the oil to temperature over your fire.

Form dough into rings and place in oil.

Flip with tongs or hotdog stick once one side has browned

Remove from oil and let cool a few minutes

Sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar

Try not to eat them all.

Campfire Pizza

  • Homemade or Store Bought Pizza Dough
  • Sauce
  • Cheese
  • Cast Iron Pan (A lid is helpful, but not a necessity.)
  • Pizza Seasoning

Pizza is great food for camping. Roll the dough so it fills the bottom of a cast iron skillet.  Heat the dough over your fire until the bottom turns golden brown. Turn the dough so the browned side is facing up and add your sauce, cheese and toppings. If your skillet has a lid, add it now and finish the pizza over the flames.  Try to work fast when adding your toppings, campfire pizza cooks quickly.

Campfire Ham and Cheese Melt

  • Tortilla
  • Ham
  • Cheese
  • Hot dog Cooking Stick

Layer ham and cheese on tortilla.  Roll it up and put it on your hot dog stick.  Toast over open flames.

Fish Tacos

  • Fresh caught fish
  • Vegetable oil
  • Your favorite breading (Optional)
  • Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning
  • Lime
  • Tortillas
  • Cilantro
  • Salsa or veggies of you like

Fish never tastes better than on the day it is caught.  Fish tacos are easy to prepare and make a gratifying meal after working hard to find the fish.  Preparing the batter in a zip lock bag the night before can save some time on shore.  Clean and bread your fish. Bring the oil to heat and gently place the filets in the pan.  Add Tony’s seasoning.  Cook until both sides are golden brown. Toast the tortillas and add your toppings.

Foil Packet Meals

If you are looking for simple food for camping, this is it.  Packet meals are the perfect dinner after a long day of hiking. They are calorie dense and require little effort to prepare.

  • Beef
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots
  • Onion
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • Salt and Pepper

Use heavy foil, or double wrap, and place on campfire coals for 45-60 minutes. Occasionally turn the packet so it cooks evenly.

Breakfast Tacos

  • Tortillas
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Bacon or Sausage
  • Skillet or aluminum pie pan

This quick breakfast will get you on the trail in no time. Cook the bacon or sausage, make scrambled eggs in a skillet, or pie pan if you are traveling light, toast the tortillas and put it all together.
