When you’re beyond the reach of cellphone reception and need to know how much time is left before you’re left walking in darkness, there is an easy way to estimate the time until sunset.
Fully extend your arm in front of you and count the number of fingers between the bottom of the sun and the horizon. Each of your fingers represents around 15 minutes.
For every four fingers you have roughly an hour of remaining daylight.
Quickly checking this while on the trail ensures you’ll make it back, or set up camp, by nightfall.
